Post Natal Care

The first three months after delivery is very important for the mother. During this period, the expanded uterus shrinks back to normal position, ligaments, muscles and tendons associated with uterus start gaining back the lost power. Mother also recovers back the mental strength, which will be a bit low in the first week after delivery. Both mother and the newly arrived guest need attention and special care. Ayurveda explains in detail regarding mother care There is an Indian saying that β€˜the first 40 days of life will impact the next 40 years of life.

Aims of Post Natal Care

1. To restore the agni.
2. Normalize the vata.
3. Optimize the quality of breast milk.
4. To avoid exertion.
5. Diet should be very light.
6. To calm the vata, vitiated oil massages are recommended.

Oil massage and hot water bath

should be continued for next 2 to 3 months. Oils preferred are – Balaswagandhadi Taila, Ksheerabala taila or Bala taila. It helps to strengthen the lower back, hip area, bones, muscles and ligaments.

Lumbar belt

Using an abdomen belt with moderate pressure at least for 4 – 5 hours a day helps to strengthen back, supports uterus and ligaments.

Rest

While mild walking is quite ok, rigorous work, heavy weight lifting is totally discouraged. It leaves the uterine muscles and tendons weak. Uterine prolapse during post mid life is linked to improper after delivery care of mother and rest.

Ayurvedic medicines and Food.

The mothers Agni will be low and Vata is vitiated immediately after delivery. A special diet plan for the prasuta is recommended for this period to make good the loss of the reproductive fluids, dhatus and blood during the pregnancy and delivery. The prasuta should consume light yet nourishing food during the sutika kaal.
